Volunteering At Heart of the Valley- Personal Experience

By Darlene Christianson

I recently relocated to the Santa Clara region as my husband took on a new position in the area. As a Canadian citizen without a work visa, I am not able to work in the US at this time. The initial transition to Santa Clara was difficult for me, as I only knew one person; my hubby. With my kids all grown up, not working outside of the home it was tough to meet new people.

In Canada, I was an avid volunteer and I wanted to get involved in my new community.  I went online and searched many organizations.  I soon came across Heart of the Valley-SERVICES FOR SENIORS INC. While I was in Canada, I had been involved with the Salvation Army friendly visitor program.  I visited a wonderful senior for years; I wanted to do this again. I have always found seniors offer a wealth of knowledge and are always more than willing to share.

After filling out an application and going through the interview process with Glenda, I was matched up with a lovely woman named Glorian Quiqley. Little did I know the friendship we would forge so quickly. They say that people come into your life right when you need them.  I believe we both came into each other’s lives at the right time.  We both needed a little help, and a new friend.  Glorian is 86 years young and totally blind.  She is a go getter and never lets anything hold her back from leading a productive and happy life.  She is heavily involved in her community.  She prides herself in living independently. She keeps active in her amazing garden.   She makes mean spaghetti & meatballs and she is someone I pride as my friend.  Every week I visit Glorian for a few hours to help with her correspondence.  We are like girlfriends, chatting, laughing and sharing.  Being a native of the area, Glorian has taught me so much about my new home.  This experience has been and continues to be very rewarding to me, and I encourage others to reach out and volunteer with Heart of the Valley.  By giving of yourself you always are given so much more back.
